Job Description

Salary Range: $103,858.70 - $129,823.38 annually

Reporting to the Chief Risk Officer (CRO), the Head of Compliance and Audit is the key leader responsible for the development and delivery of an efficient and effective compliance and audit program across the organization. The Head of Compliance and Audit is responsible for  working with credit union stakeholders to proactively, efficiently and continuously improve control environment and develop programs to minimize risk including: compliance with all federal and state regulations, internal controls such as audit and quality assurance, vendor management and contract review, legislative and regulatory liaison, member complaint oversight, and records retention. The Head of Compliance and Audit oversees compliance and audit disciplines including the annual audit and compliance plan, scope of annual plans, tracking and reporting of management responses to Executive Leadership and Supervisory Committee.


  • Establishes, communicates and leads the strategic direction of a comprehensive compliance and audit program. Responsible for developing and executing the compliance and audit program across the organization, including formal comments to regulatory agencies on proposed rules.
  • Compliance Oversight: Ensures the credit union is in compliance with all federal and state regulations, including analyzing, monitoring, reporting and making recommendations to Leadership to develop strategies and implement policies/procedures pertaining to new and pending laws and regulations that could affect the credit union practices. Ensures appropriate leaders are well versed on new regulations and take needed actions (i.e. new standards and procedures) to ensure the organization is in compliance.
  • Internal Controls Oversight (Audit and Exam). Responsible for overseeing internal and external audit functions. Provides guidance, direction and management oversight of policies related to internal controls including regulatory exams, financial audits, internal audits and compliance reviews. Acts as liaison between Credit Union and auditors. Responsible for tracking findings, outstanding commitments, completed findings, and report to Executive Leadership and Supervisory Committee.
  • Leads and develops a team of professionals to execute compliance and audit related programs and projects. Monitors performance, provides ongoing performance feedback and coaching to direct reports, indirect reports and others as needed, and conducts performance & development conversations as well as effective performance evaluations. Train, mentor and coach direct reports to further develop their. Expects and enables direct reports to support the works of peers. Provide appropriate communications and updates to CRO pertaining to areas of responsibilities.
  • Vendor Management, Contract Review and Records Retention:  Ownership of the organization’s third party vendor management program and vendor due diligence process including oversight of Relationship Manager’s assessment and management of assumed risks. Provide guidance, direction and management oversight for the development, implementation and maintenance of policies and processes related to acquiring corporate contracts and associated documentation related to vendor due diligence, and archiving properly executed, signed contracts and documentation and notifying managers to review and execute new contracts and contract renewals in a timely manner. Ensure record retention process follows policy.
  • Collaborate with the Leadership Team to ensure compliance is considered in the forefront of new projects/initiatives and not as an afterthought. Ensures compliance supports defined member experience and optimization of business processes. 
  • Quality Assurance: Provide management oversight and guidance to support the review, research, and maintenance of lending quality, suggest improvements and enhancements to existing lending programs, processes, and procedures.
  • Responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of compliance, audit, loan quality assurance, and record retention policies, standards and procedures to consistently deliver quality program oversight to the organization.
  • Remain abreast of legislative, regulatory and compliance changes and updates through appropriate channels: NCUA, CUNA, NAFCU, CCUL, CFPB, FRB and legal counsel, seminars, webinars and training sessions.  Maintain compliance certification(s) by attending required recertification classes. Comments on proposed rules on behalf of the credit union.  
  • Supports and participates in continuous improvement activities. Represents the Credit Union in a positive and professional manner. Maintains member, team members and other sensitive information with confidentiality. Treats co-workers and members with respect.
  • Supports, participates and volunteers in credit union member community activities, member relations and events that promotes member centric experiences.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements


  • 7+ years of experience in financial regulatory compliance, audit leadership role driving continuous improvement in business outcomes while mitigating risks.

  • Experience developing an effective compliance, audit program with strong assessment tools and controls identifying risks and opportunities.

  • Evidence of increasing responsibility and supervisory/management experience.

  • Experience with legislative and regulatory reviews, including evidence of written comments on proposed regulations.

  • Thorough knowledge of change management practices ensuring all stakeholders are prepared and comply with new regulatory policies.
  • Thorough knowledge of compliance reviews and reporting, internal controls including regulatory agency exams, internal audit, quality assurance, third party vendor management, enterprise risk management.

  • A thorough understanding of financial services operations and business processes.
  • Strong leadership, management and interpersonal skills with all levels of staff, organizational skills.

  • People management skills with a particular emphasis on performance management disciplines.

  • Strong third party/vendor management and contract negotiation skills.

  • Strong problem solving ability. Presentation skills and self-starter.

  • Ability to identify and define appropriate quality measures and performance targets.

  • Business Acumen, Process Management, Negotiating, Conflict Management, Developing Direct Reports, Motivating Others, Sizing Up People.

  • CUCE (Credit Union Compliance Expert from CUNA) and/or NCCO (NAFCU Certified Compliance Officer) or equivalent.
  • Internal audit certification, change management or project management certification
  • Bachelor’s Degree in business, technology or related field, or 4 or more years related experience and/or training or combination of education/experience.

  • Experience working for an organization with a regional model including some matrix reporting structure.
